Project Overview

In the rural village of Lory near Milot, there is a group of farmers who because of lack of economic opportunity were struggling to provide the necessities for their families. The manager of the goat farm, Metellus Louicius is a teacher making less than $100.00 a month. Metellus hopes that goat farming will supplement his income and provide a pathway out of poverty for his two young boys. The Bon Berger Goat Farm was established during the summer of 2009 and in August the group made their first purchase of 20 goats; 18 females and 2 males. Goats often have two or three kids a year making this a great investment. The income generated from the sale of goats, will provide a steady income for the families helping to lift them out of poverty. In addition, the local community will benefit and enjoy this ongoing source of nourishment. Goat meat is in high demand in Haiti and today the Bon Berger goats are thriving and reproducing. The gift of a goat is a sustainable way to help struggling families in Haiti plan for the future. Recently, a male buck from the Dominican Republic was added to the goat farm to help improve the breed of the farm’s goats. The Bon Berger Goat Farm is a great example of how animal husbandry projects can improve the food supply and ensure a sustainable source of income for struggling families in the developing world. You can invest in the Bon Berger Goat Farm by “Sponsoring-a-Goat” or sponsoring an entire “Goat Farm Project”. Your investment will empower families living in the village of Lory to create sustainable economic opportunity through their own hard work! In the coming months, Metellus along with his family and other Bon Berger goat farmers will be implementing the recommendations made by the team of veterinarians from World Vets. Now with a focus on growth and planning for the future this group is looking forward to providing a pathway out of poverty for their families and are empowered to create a better future. Their children can attend school and have access to more nutritious meals.
