Cassava Factory
Group Name: Union des Jeunes de Carre
Project Overview
The village of Carre is located in northern Haiti with a population of about 2,000. In this region farmers mainly grow yucca, sweet potato, corn, bean, peanut and banana. The group, L’Union des Jeunes de Carre is operating the first cassava factory in the area. Cassava is a type of bread made from yucca. The group has several objectives; to encourage local farmers to grow more yucca, to have the factory available for the farmers to produce their own cassava and to provide a central location for local cassava vendors to purchase high quality cassava for re-sale. L’Union des Jeunes de Carre charges farmers using the cassava factory a small fee to mill their yucca. In addition, the group bakes their own cassava, selling it for profit earning additional income. This project is already having a tremendous impact on the people of Carre. 30 young Haitians have joined forces, volunteering their time to peel yucca providing more ingredients so the cassava factory can meet local market demand. The cassava factory makes 3 different types of cassava ranging in taste from “simple” to sweet. The ingredients in the sweet cassava include coconut and cinnamon – absolutely delicious! Cassava is eaten by itself or with jam, peanut butter or avocado. The future for this rural farming community is already looking brighter. The farmers are growing more yucca and entire families are now employed again. Your investment in the first cassava factory in Carre will enable the mill workers, the yucca farmers and the local cassava street vendors to lead more productive lives while strengthening the local economy.
