Palm Fruit Tree Farming
Project Overview
Odobeng is a village located in the central region of Ghana. Odobeng has a dense rain forest climate which provides a natural setting for palm fruit trees to grow in abundance. It is in this rural village that a group of farmers have developed a plan to grow palm fruit trees and to cultivate the fruit for sale to a nearby iF Foundation supported processing mill. The mill will manufacture palm oil and palm kernel oil from the harvested fruit. Until forming a partnership with the iF Foundation, much of the fruit had gone to waste because of lack of adequate resources for cultivating and harvesting the palm fruit. The farmers are cultivating 40 hectares of land which should produce approximately 2,000 bunches of palm fruit per season. There are 2 harvesting seasons in a calendar year after the initial 3 year growing period. This project will enable the local farmers to grow palm fruit trees on land that was once fallow, stimulating the economy. It will also provide new jobs and income for those who will be processing the palm fruit into oil. This project will have an impact on the entire village through agriculture and commerce helping to create a sustainable pathway out of poverty for families living in rural Ghana.
